Frequently Asked Questions

How does WordLocker work?

Each day at the time you set, WordLocker presents a 3-stage vocabulary challenge: first you review new words as cards, then you match English words to their translations in your native language, and finally you arrange letters to spell each word correctly. When all three stages are complete, any apps you’ve optionally blocked are unlocked.

Do I have to create an account?

No. WordLocker works fully without sign-up — tap ‘Skip for now’ during onboarding to continue anonymously. Your data stays on your device. If you sign up later, all your learning history syncs to the cloud.

Does WordLocker know which apps I've blocked?

No. By Apple’s privacy design, the FamilyControls API stores blocked apps as opaque tokens — meaning we don’t know which apps you selected, only your device does. App names are never sent to our servers.

Is blocking required?

No, it’s fully optional. Tap ‘Skip for now’ during onboarding to continue without blocking. You’ll just complete daily challenges, no apps blocked. You can enable it later from Settings.

How do you determine my level?

During onboarding you take a short 6-word test (ranging from A1 to C1 difficulty). It’s not an ’exam’ — it’s a calibration so we can serve you words at the right difficulty. The result is framed positively — wherever you start, you’ll progress.

Is it free, or do I need a subscription?

WordLocker’s free tier offers 1 daily challenge (with 5 words). To access all features, you need Premium: $4.99/week (3-day free trial) or $24.99/year (7-day free trial). The annual plan works out to $0.48/week.

How do I cancel my subscription?

iPhone Settings → your Apple ID name → Subscriptions → WordLocker → Cancel. If you cancel during the free trial, you won’t be charged. You’ll keep access through the end of the current paid period.

How quickly does my streak break?

If you skip a day, your streak resets to zero. Premium users get 2 monthly ‘streak freezes’ — if you miss a day, a freeze is automatically used and your streak is preserved. Premium also includes ‘streak recovery’: if you broke a streak yesterday, complete 2 challenges today to restore it.

Which languages are supported?

We currently offer translations in Turkish, English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. The language being learned is always English; you choose your native language during onboarding.

Which accent is used for pronunciation?

American English (en-US) by default. Premium users can switch to British English (en-GB) and adjust speech rate between slow / normal / fast. All pronunciation runs offline on-device using Apple’s AVSpeechSynthesizer.

Does it work on iPad?

WordLocker targets iOS 16+, so it runs on iPad, but the UI is currently optimized for iPhone. Full iPad layout is on our roadmap.

Does my data sync across devices?

Only if you create an account. Sign in with Apple or email and your learning data syncs to Supabase (European data center) and shows up on your other devices. In anonymous mode each device keeps its own local data.

I'm not getting notifications, what should I do?

Check iPhone Settings → Notifications → WordLocker and confirm notifications are allowed. If you have a Focus mode active, WordLocker notifications may be silenced. If you declined notification permission during onboarding, you can re-enable it in Settings.

One of the apps I blocked has disappeared from the block list. What now?

This is a known behavior of Apple’s token system — iOS occasionally regenerates app tokens. Just go to Settings → Blocking and update your block list.

How do I delete my data?

Anonymous mode: just delete the app — all data is wiped from the device. Account mode: email [email protected] requesting account deletion, and we’ll permanently delete your data from Supabase within 30 days.
