Recto keeps your documents on your device and sends us nothing, so we cannot look at your file to work out what went wrong. Telling us your iOS version, what you were doing, and what happened instead makes the difference between a guess and a fix.
Things that come up
Does anything I open leave my device?
No. Your documents never leave your device — compression, composition, scanning, and page moves all run on your iPhone, and there are no accounts to sign into. The only thing the app ever sends is three small notifications to its developer (a first launch, the Pro screen opening, a completed purchase), carrying no document data of any kind. The Settings screen says so, and the privacy policy describes each one in full.
Will compression ruin the text in my PDF?
No. Recto classifies every page before it touches it. Pages that carry text or vector art are copied through byte-for-byte rather than rebuilt, so the text layer survives and stays selectable. Only image-dominant pages are rebuilt, and ambiguity always fails toward leaving the page alone.
How small can it actually make a file?
It depends entirely on what is inside. A photo-heavy document has enormous room — a four-page PDF of camera photos went from 33,7 MB to 2,3 MB at the Web target, which is 93% smaller. A text document that is already efficient has almost none, and Recto will tell you that rather than pretend otherwise.
What does the ID card mode do?
It places the front and back of a card on one A4 page at 85.6 × 54 mm, the real physical size of an ID card. Print the page at 100% scale and the result measures correctly with a ruler.
Is there a watermark on anything?
No. Nothing Recto exports is watermarked, and there is no daily limit on how many documents you can process.
What do I need to run it?
An iPhone running iOS 26 or later. iPad and Mac are planned, but each will get its own design rather than a stretched phone layout, so neither ships until it is actually designed.
A compression didn't shrink much
That is usually the honest answer rather than a bug. Recto only rebuilds pages that are image-dominant; pages carrying text or vector art are copied through untouched so their text survives. A document that is mostly text is already close to as small as it can be, and the result screen will tell you what it actually achieved rather than claiming a number it did not hit.
Reporting something broken
Include as much of this as you can:
- What you were trying to do, and what happened instead
- Your iPhone model and iOS version
- The Recto version, from Settings → Version
- Roughly how large the document was, and how many pages
Please do not attach a document you would not want a stranger to read. We will ask for one only if we truly cannot reproduce the problem without it.
